Tom and James Monaghan purchased “DomiNick’s” pizza store in Ypsilanti, MI in 1960. James traded his half of the business the following year. By 1978 the solely owned company had been renamed “Domino’s Pizza, Inc” and had 200 locations. Over the next few years, rapid acquisition of or mergers with other regional pizza companies allowed them to gain significant territory very quickly. The introduction of the “30 minutes or it’s free” guarantee won them increased market share across their delivery network.
The opening of the first international store was in Winnipeg, Canada, in 1983. The 1990s saw the organization incorporate non-pizza items into the menu, starting with breadsticks and moving to buffalo wings, sandwiches and desserts.
