History
Richard “Dick” Bowen founded Honey Dew Donuts in 1973 in Mansfield, Massachusetts. However, the roots of Honey Dew extend into Bowen’s childhood. At age 12, he baked donuts with his father at an area shop and fell in love with the entrepreneurial possibilities. In high school, he developed the name Honey Dew Donuts. After graduating, he joined the Army and went to Germany. There, he honed his donut-baking skills. Soon after he opened the first shop, Bowen fielded an inquiry about franchising. He agreed, and the franchise chain was born.
In 1978, the Plainville, Massachusetts, Honey Dew became the first coffee/donut shop to use a drive-through window. In 2002, Honey Dew opened its training center in Plainville. This location is where new ideas and products are tested and where franchise owners go to practice their skills. The current corporate offices are above the shop.
